Case Study III – Ethanol plant

Problem Statement

Customer needed a spring Loaded Nozzle Desuperheater  for an Ethanol Plant in Northern India, supplied through an Engineering  EPC having better atomization and for ensuring steam is not entering into the water valve side during non-functional time of desuperheater.

Importing spring loaded desuperheater can be  costly with a high lead time.

Solution

We developed desuperheaters with spring loaded nozzle with Inconel 718 grade spring with the following features:

  • In-house design, meeting the economic cost requirement
  • High rangeability
  • The design prevents water from atomising inside the nozzle, regardless of cooling water temperature
  • On loss of water pressure the water system is protected against high temperatures due to spring loading of the nozzle

Benefit

The desuperheater with spring loaded nozzle, produced finely atomized water particles for efficient desuperheating of the superheated steam.

It reduced the lead time and cost along with the local support and the desuperheater is working smoothly for the last 24 months.

The total cost of a spring-loaded nozzle is less than 50% compared to an imported one.

We also saved valuable foreign exchange for the country as it served as an import substitute.
