Case Study IV – Water purification in a Sugar Plant

Problem Statement

Customer required a control valve which had a high pressure drop from 81 bar inlet pressure to 1 bar outlet pressure for Water treatment specialist for a Sugar Plant in Northern India

 Solution

To develop a control valve with a trim design having  up to 13 stages of pressure drop.

To sustain the high pressure drop, we designed a multi-path, multi-stage trim with axial flow along with plug having grooves for achieving good controllability at lower lifts.

The pressure reduction is through axial slots

The gradual increase in flow capacity (Cv)  in each stage ensures that the trim exit velocity is low. The no. of pressure drop stages are selected in such a way that there is no cavitation at any stages.

Operating Parameters

  • Size: 3/4”, Rating-600#
  • Medium: Water at 50◦c , CV – 1
  • Pressure Drop from 81 bar to 1 bar
  • Modified linear flow characteristics

 Benefit

The control valve with our designed trim is working without any shutdown for more than 24 months,  thus saving on the production loss and also cost of spares being bought frequently.

 Economics

The total cost of this valve is 20%-30% less than the competitor product
