Desuperheaters are simple and effective devices to reduce the temperature of superheated steam to almost saturation level to make the steam useful in a process.

Several types of design of the Desuperheater are available. It is highly recommended by the control valve specialists in India that the following properties are considered when sizing and selecting a suitable station for the given application.

Turndown Ratio:  As ‘turndown’ is used to describe the range of the flow rates over which the Desuperheater will be operative. The critical parameter here is the variation in the inlet pressure and temperature that causes the variation in the requirement of cooling liquid.

  • Steam turndown ratio: It reflects the range of stream flow rates where the device can effectively Desuperheat.
  •  Operating temperatures and pressure
  • Steam flow rate
  • Amount of the superheat
  • Temperature of Desuperheated steam required after the desperheating.
  • Water pressure available.
  • The in-line Desuperheater, the distance traveled by the steam before the complete Desuperheating is a critical consideration. It is absorption length.

It should be noted that a Desuperheater itself is the only part of the Desuperheating stations, and it includes the necessary controlling operations.

While talking so much about the Desuperheater, how can we not mention the RK S40 Desuperheater!

The RK Series 40 Pipeline Desuperheaters are a simple way to reduce superheated steam or other vapours to temperatures close to saturation. The superheated vapour is passed through a section of the pipe fitted with a spray nozzle that produces dispersed droplets from a supply of pressurized condensate. These fine particles promote rapid evaporation. The necessary heat is absorbed from the superheated vapour, lowering the temperature.

Applications: The power and sugar industry have applications for the RK S40 Desuperheater.

Features of RK S40 Desuperheater

  • Temperature control to 6°C of saturation
  • Variable area spray unit with high rangeability
  • Fluid temperature control that is precise and repeatable
  • High water pressure spray capability
  • Tight shut-off
  • A wide range of nozzle sizes are available
  • Construction materials that are resistant to erosion
  • Ease of installation
  • Low maintenance

Multiple nozzle axial injection Desuperheaters offer several nozzles across the flow of superheated steam. It offers a good dispersion of the water droplets. There are three primary types of the Nozzle axial injection Desuperheater.

Fixed Area Type: In this case, all the nozzles are open. As the Desuperheater is operative, the cooling water is regulated by the spray water control valve.

Variable Spray Type: The downstream temperature determines the number of exposed nozzles. The cooling water enters the Desuperheater through the water jacket to the nozzles. Depending on the downstream steam temperature, the actuator moves the stem down or up progressively to expose or close the nozzles. The temperature changes as it moves up and down.

Spring-assisted type: It is a perfect combination of the two mentioned above. The moving plug changes the number of open spring-loaded nozzles while adjusting the flow into the main pipeline. These types of Desuperheater have higher benefits when correctly used. The experts offering desuperheaters in India, R. K. Control Instruments, are the best. Utilizing the RK S40 Desuperheater allows you to explore the finest services and benefits accordingly.
